Does an Infrared Sauna Kill Viruses? COVID-19 + More | Health Mate

Does an Infrared Sauna Kill Viruses?

There is an increasingly higher level of importance of staying healthy and having a strong immune system in the current health climate. This is true especially during the COVID-19 era we’re experiencing and one that we’ll continue to go through for the foreseeable future.

But this isn’t limited to just COVID-19. We as human beings still experience an onslaught of exposure to bacteria and viruses in our day-to-day lives. What’s important is how we prepare our bodies to help fight off these viruses and keep us from getting sick.

When looking for ways to ultimately kill these viruses, some of the common options include using hand sanitizer, washing your hands regularly, taking vitamins, getting enough sleep, and having a proper diet. But what about an infrared sauna? Does an infrared sauna kill viruses?

In order to answer that question, we need to look at what an infrared sauna is, what it does, how it affects the body and its effect on the immune system.

Let’s dive in.

What is an Infrared Sauna?

An infrared sauna uses infrared heaters to emit light of varying wavelengths within the infrared light section of the electromagnetic spectrum.

This light penetrates the skin and is able to, depending on which wavelength is being absorbed, have an effect on the internal systems of the body.

Near-infrared, with wavelengths from 0.76 to 1.5 microns, is the shortest wavelength in the infrared light spectrum. Some of the benefits include wound healing, improved skin, boosting collagen, and muscle recovery.

Mid-infrared, with wavelengths from 1.5 to 5.6 microns, penetrates deeper than near-infrared, but not as deep as far-infrared. Benefits include improved circulation, joint pain relief, expands blood vessels for better circulation, weight loss, and raises body temperature.

Far-infrared, with wavelengths from 5.6 all the way to 1000 microns, has the deepest level of penetration within the infrared light spectrum. For reference, light from the sun is considered far-infrared. Some of these benefits include strengthening the cardiovascular system, boosts immunity, helps with detoxification, and lowering blood pressure.

Our select saunas also come with chromotherapy lighting, which users colors at varying wavelengths in order to produce additional benefits.

The combination of all three of these types of infrared light within our infrared saunas, including chromotherapy lighting, is the best recipe for a healthy immune system and so much more. An Infrared Sauna, COVID-19, and Other Common Viruses

The main topic of this article is addressing the question of – does an infrared sauna kill viruses?

A blue boxing glove punching a virus.

Since we know that far-infrared light helps to boost immunity, help with detoxification, and other internal and cellular health benefits, does that lead us to believe that viruses including SAR-CoV-2 are killed along the way?

According to an article from Marc Cohen, MD from the Extreme Wellness Institute in Melbourne, VIC, Australia, in seeing whether or not heat can be a therapeutic intervention for COVID-19, it goes on to tell us:

“Enveloped viruses such as SAR-CoV-2 are sensitive to heat and are destroyed by temperatures tolerable to humans.”

However, it’s concluded that:

“Heat is a cheap, convenient, and widely accessible therapeutic modality with a long history of traditional use, yet it remains to be seen if heat can be effective in the treatment or prevention of COVID-19.”

We can’t say for sure if infrared sauna (heat therapy) use can be directly responsible for eliminating COVID-19.

When it comes to other common viruses, including the common cold, and influenza, infrared sauna use is excellent for reducing inflammation and helping to expand blood vessels which transport blood quicker and more efficiently.

Also, there is an increase in white blood cell production to help combat the virus, and cell regeneration.

So yes, an infrared sauna kills viruses, but indirectly because it aids in other processes that ultimately work to eliminate the threat, keep your body healthy, and prevent sickness. When looking at if an infrared sauna kills SAR-CoV-2 specifically, that is remained to be seen and studied extensively.

What Have We Learned?

We see that infrared sauna use is an amazing option when looking to benefit your life in more ways than one, including increasing your immunity and fighting off viruses and other bacteria.
